UK Number Types

Geographic (01/02): Fixed-line numbers tied to a specific UK city or area. 01 codes are outside London; 02 codes are major city codes (020 London, 0121 Birmingham, etc.).
Mobile (07): UK mobile numbers start with 07. They do not reveal your location. Some 07 numbers are non-geographic (07x00–07x99).
Freephone (080): Free to call from UK landlines and mobiles. Common for customer service lines.
Premium Rate (09): Charged at above-normal rates. Check before calling.
Non-geographic (03): Charged at the same rate as geographic calls (included in bundles). Used by businesses and organisations.

Why do some London numbers start with 020 7 and others 020 3?

The 020 prefix covers all of London. The following digit (7 or 8) was used historically for inner and outer London. The 020 3 range was opened to handle the growing demand for London numbers and has no geographic significance.
