Usage Tips & Examples

How to Use the Time Duration Calculator

  1. Paste or enter your input into the text field.
  2. Configure any options (format, delimiter, encoding, or mode) using the controls above the output.
  3. The result updates instantly — no submit button required for most operations.
  4. Click Copy or Download to take the output to your next step.

Enter a start time and an end time in HH:MM or HH:MM:SS format, and the calculator returns the elapsed duration in hours, minutes and seconds, plus a 'total seconds' figure for arithmetic. Or use the Add/Subtract mode to take a base time and shift it by a duration — handy for working out when a 90-minute meeting will end or when a deferred build started.

How the Time Duration Calculator Works

Cross-midnight ranges are handled by treating the end time as next-day if it's earlier than the start. The calculator works in 24-hour notation; if you prefer 12-hour AM/PM input you'll need to convert mentally. There's no time-zone awareness — both times are assumed to be in the same zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the end time is before the start time?

The calculator assumes the range crosses midnight — end time is treated as next-day. So 23:00 → 02:00 returns 3 hours, not negative 21.

Does it handle time zones or daylight-saving transitions?

No — both times are assumed to be in the same zone. For DST-aware calculations between zones, use the Timezone Converter.

Can I enter times in 12-hour AM/PM format?

Currently only 24-hour input is supported. Convert 1:30 PM to 13:30 before entering.

Is the result accurate to the second?

Yes — input both times with HH:MM:SS and the result is exact to the second. HH:MM input rounds to the nearest minute.
